Where this idea goes next
- Fitts's Law Fitts prices the reach to a target whose location is already known. Affordance theory is the precondition underneath that price: a target you cannot perceive is not merely hard to reach, it is not there to reach at all.
- Dark Patterns A false affordance and a dark pattern are close cousins with opposite intent — one is a design that forgot to communicate correctly, the other communicates incorrectly on purpose. Brignull's taxonomy is Gaver's "false affordance" turned into a business strategy.
- Jakob's Law A signifier only works if it matches a convention the user already carries from every other product they have used — Jakob's Law is the reason a blue underline or a chevron reads as clickable before a single word of copy is read.
