Here is a small website. Five sections, a fixed nav, a home page — pan it with a drag or the arrows below, the way you would pan any canvas wider than its window.

Two sliders run the whole thing. Fragmentation is the shear from the last act, applied to a scroll instead of a building: it scatters and tilts the five sections off their row. Flowis the dossier's other half of the argument — the ribbon that threads the sections back together, the landmarks and sightlines that let a visitor stay found inside the scatter. Watch both readouts as you move each slider on its own before combining them.

Orientation = 100 − fragmentation + 0.55 × flow. Momentum = 15 + 0.25 × fragmentation + 0.65 × flow. Both are modelled proxies, not measurements of a real visitor — authored to match the dossier's own account of what wayfinding and forward pull are made of (landmarks and sight lines for the first, continuous motion for the second), clamped to 0–100. Disorder, or Controlled Instability

Deconstructivism is a name given after the fact, not a manifesto anyone signed.

In 1988 the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted an exhibition — curated by Philip Johnson and Mark Wigley — that gathered seven architects who had never called themselves a movement: Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Bernard Tschumi, and Coop Himmelb(l)au. What it named was a shared refusal of modernism's insistence that a building should resolve into one stable, symmetrical whole — pushed toward fragmented, angular, non-orthogonal forms instead. Hadid's own route into that vocabulary predates the exhibition by more than a decade: her thesis at London's Architectural Association, Malevich's Tektonik, worked directly from Kazimir Malevich's Suprematist paintings — floating, non-objective geometric planes — years before she built anything.

The distinction this whole page turns on is the one the dossier states as its own thesis: chaos that is designed is not the same as chaos that is merely present. A pile of rubble is disordered and tells you nothing; the plates in the last act are disordered and still answer to a row each of them never left. The test is simple to state and hard to fake — remove the one deliberate violation from a composition and ask whether it loses energy or gains clarity. If it loses energy, the disorder was doing work. If it gains clarity, the disorder was noise wearing a costume.

The lineage does not stop at buildings. Through the 1990s and 2000s, the same architects (Hadid prominently) moved from hand-fragmented form toward parametricism — using computation to generate the curvature and complexity that drafting by hand could not hold precisely. The chaos got no less controlled; the system computing it simply got faster.

The 1988 exhibition, its curators and its seven named architects are independently confirmed (Wikipedia, "Deconstructivism"). Hadid's AA thesis and its Malevich source are independently confirmed (Wikipedia, "Zaha Hadid"). The parametricism narrative is the dossier's own framing of a well-attested general shift toward computational design tools in this period; it was not independently re-checked against a primary architectural-history source in this build.

Vitra Fire Station · 1991–93 — Concrete planes tilt off vertical — walls that lean rather than stand.

Vitra Fire Station (1991–93, Hadid's first built project) and its leaning concrete planes, and the Heydar Aliyev Center (Baku, opened 2012) and MAXXI (Rome, opened 2010, RIBA Stirling Prize the same year) and their dates and attributions, are independently confirmed against Wikipedia. Phaeno Science Centre's 2005 completion is well documented generally but was not among the buildings independently re-checked in this session's verification pass — treat that one date as reported, not re-confirmed here. The "more than one route through the building" reading of MAXXI and the "no seam" reading of Heydar Aliyev Center are this page's own paraphrase of a widely documented visual property, not quotations.

Rooms, or One Landscape

On the left, the ordinary shape of a portfolio: cards in a grid, each one an enclosed room you enter and leave. On the right, the dossier's own contemporary examples pushed to their logical shape — Bruno Simon's navigable 3D portfolio, Apple's scroll-as-camera-movement product pages — one continuous scene the visitor moves through rather than a list they click down. Say plainly what the dossier itself says: no source here documents Hadid's buildings as a direct historical influence on either product. The kinship is a design analogy — a loose structural resemblance worth teaching, not a traceable lineage worth citing as fact.

Even Hadid's most radical buildings kept their visitor oriented — landmarks, sight lines, a material that stays consistent from one zone to the next.

The ribbon below is fixed at a moderately fragmented, moderately flowing setting — this act is not about the sliders. It is about the three things a screen adds on top of the geometry purely so a visitor does not get lost inside it. Remove them one at a time.

Orientation falls almost one point per point of fragmentation; only flow buys it back, and only at a little over half the rate.

Insight

Continuity is the discipline that makes fragmentation legible.

Fragmentation alone is just noise with better lighting — it buys interest and spends orientation, and past a point it spends more than it earns. Flow alone is just a rigid page with a nicer scrollbar — safe, but with the 15-point floor of a scene nobody has any reason to keep watching. What Hadid's buildings, and the web pages that borrow their logic, actually do is run both at once: the fragmentation earns the attention, and the continuity — the ribbon, the sight line, the material that never changes — is the tax that keeps the attention from becoming a visitor who is simply lost.

Mental model

Whenever a layout fragments its content to earn attention,

look for whether anything threads the fragments back together — a landmark, a sight line, a material that never changes,

because fragmentation without that thread does not read as bold, it reads as lost, and the amount of thread required rises faster than the fragmentation itself.

TomorrowFind one page you own that breaks its own grid on purpose — a hero image that bleeds past its column, a rotated pull-quote. Ask what, specifically, tells a visitor where they are once that break happens. If the honest answer is nothing, that is not deconstructivism. It is just a broken layout.
