A style topic (all twelve of Q2, plus the three Q4 weeks the dossier itself names reruns — Zero-UI, Kinetic Typography, Sonic Branding) loses up to 65% of its baseline "climate" score as the three sliders' average rises. A principle topic never loses ground; if it is tied to one of the three forces it gains up to (100 − baseline) more as that force rises. Every Q1 week is untagged, so it never moves at all — the constant this Lab exists to show. Concept

Climate, Not Weather

Interface design is the discipline of borrowing a physical or cognitive metaphor, riding it until its constraints are exhausted, and being forced to find the next one — and every generation that does this mistakes its own current metaphor for the terminus of the process, rather than for its latest station.

That is the year's thesis, stated plainly enough to be wrong. Its survival depends on a distinction this capstone keeps testing rather than asserting: a principle is a fact about a hand, an eye, or a guarantee that holds regardless of which decade renders it — Fitts's Law priced a mouse in 1954 and a pinch-gesture in 2026 with the same equation. A style is the finish currently worn on top of that fact — chrome, glass, a particular corner radius — and finishes cycle on a schedule the three Executive Reviews each measured from a different angle.

You are not the first generation to solve your problems. You are the first generation to solve them in this material — and the first to mistake the material for the solution.

Grand Horizon Roundup, Part 1

Three reviews already ran this test on their own thirteen weeks each. Foundations graded twelve physical lineages DOCUMENTED, STRUCTURAL, or ANALOGICAL. Revolutions built a six-question framework for exactly this call, then found it still leans on invariants trusted implicitly. Human Factors graded twelve "laws" ROBUST through HEURISTIC and found the word "law" buys almost nothing on its own. This page runs the identical test on Q4's own newest material — some of it (spatial computing's physiological constraints, CRDTs, design tokens) is genuinely new infrastructure; some of it (Zero-UI's "screens will disappear," sonic branding's commissioning model) is a rerun in new clothes.

Fitts and Universal Accessibility still price the reach — now for a pinch and a gaze, not a mouse (Weeks 27, 34, 43). The rectangle itself does not disappear — the dossier's third forecast (Part 4): it gains siblings and stays the majority surface for the general public, on both the Vision Pro's thin 2024 catalog and the hard physiological ceiling (VAC, vection) that no amount of better content can style around.

Universal Accessibility

Affordance Theory
A target you cannot see is infinitely far away. Fitts assumes the affordance Norman explains.

What complicates it

Design Token Systems
A motion or touch-target token is not a style choice — it is Fitts's and Hick's measured interaction cost, given a name so it stops getting hand-tuned per component.
Hick's Choice Law
Hick prices the choice before the reach; Fitts prices the reach itself. The Model Human Processor sums both as one cost of a tap.
Affordance Theory
Fitts prices the reach to a target whose location is already known. Affordance theory is the precondition underneath that price: a target you cannot perceive is not merely hard to reach, it is not there to reach at all.
Universal Accessibility
The 44px floor this page fixes a mock screen against is Fitts arithmetic written into a building code — size and distance, budgeted for a hand that trembles as much as one that does not.
Mid-Century Modern
Fitts prices the reach to a target already sized and placed. This week is the design decision one step upstream — deciding what size and placement the body actually needs before any reach is priced at all.

"Depends on" reuses that topic's own relations.ts entries verbatim — links its own page argues. "Complicates it" is the reverse read, computed here: every other topic whose own relations.ts names this one back. Direction is structural, not a claim the chosen topic's page makes about itself.

Relatedness is checked against the same graph the Experiment act reads — eight Q4 siblings still in progress carry no edges yet, so they can never trigger a conflict here. That is a known gap in the graph's coverage, not a claim those eight weeks are unrelated to everything.

Insight

Styles are weather. Principles are climate.

Weather changes by the week and everyone still dresses for it; nobody mistakes a warm afternoon for a change in season. Design writing keeps making the equivalent mistake about styles — glassmorphism, neumorphism, Corporate Memphis, whichever finish is warm this quarter — because a screen has no sky to glance at first. The Forecast Bench is that sky: move every dial you have toward the most disruptive future you can imagine, and the physical-era principles from Week 1 never lose a point. That is not this page being sentimental about the first quarter. It is the one measurement in fifty-two weeks that every slider position agrees on.
